THE HISTORY OF PINEHURST
HISTORY OF PINEHURST
In 1895 Boston philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,000 acres of land, and with his vision of creating a New England style village with a moderate climate and Southern hospitality, Pinehurst was born.

By the first year, Tufts had directed the completion of more than 20 cottages and the Holly Inn. The Carolina Hotel was constructed at the turn of the century and opened in 1901.

In 1901 Tufts hired Donald J. Ross, a young Scottish golf professional, to direct golf operations at Pinehurst. Ross remained with Pinehurst until his death in 1948. During those five decades, Ross made perhaps the largest impact on American Golf. He designed or redesigned more than 400 golf courses throughout North America, including the first four Pinehurst Country Club Courses.
